Start Finding and Winning Scholarships… Begin Today!

The best scholarship search engine we’ve found. There is no fee to search its database of national, state and local awards and the payback may be thousands of dollars in college aid. The nine-page questionnaire covers all the bases, like whether the student is from a single-parent home or the first family member to attend college. Though some questions seem a bit ludicrous: like whether a student is right-handed, or lives in the delivery area for Papa John’s Pizza, there are actually matching scholarships in the database for just such students. Our profile pulled up 55 national and four state awards, arranged by deadline, far more than the free scholarship search engines we examined. Click on each, such as the Pablo Neruda Prize for Poetry offered by the University of Tulsa, and you’ll get details such as award amount, number of recipients and contact information.

BEST: Helpful tools like a customized Application Request Letter generator and the Bundle & Print feature that lets you download/print all results at once.

WORST: Can’t search for awards without filling out a profile.

Lost Your Scholarship? How to Cope

15 11 2009

Cancellations and cutbacks to scholarship programs have been making the news a lot lately. Michigan recently ended its state Promise Scholarship in the face of a budget crisis (though the state’s governor vows to restore funding) and other states and companies are also having to make some hard cuts. The latest round has left five high-achieving Arizona high school juniors without the four-year full-tuition scholarship they signed a contract to receive in the fifth grade.

Budgetary cutbacks aren’t the only way that students can lose scholarship money. Many scholarship funds are only designated for a set amount of time: four years, two years, or just one check. Other awards are contingent on strict eligibility criteria. A dip in your GPA, a semester where you drop below full-time, or a transfer to another college or university could potentially make you ineligible for a renewable scholarship award. All of this can change your college funding picture dramatically from year-to-year.

Transfer Students

Students who are transferring will want to see if their new college offers scholarships for transfer students. If your scholarship is from your college, it’s unlikely to transfer to your new school unless there’s a preexisting special arrangement between the two institutions. However, if you’ve won an outside scholarship, especially one from a state or national organization, you should contact the provider to see if the award will transfer to your new school. You also will want to do a scholarship search–many national scholarship awards are designated specifically for transfer students, especially students who are moving from community colleges to four-year schools.

Lost Eligibility

Students who have lost their scholarship from not meeting eligibility criteria will often have a chance to appeal the decision to revoke the award. Ask the scholarship provider if there’s an appeals process, and follow the instructions exactly in as timely a manner as possible. If there are extenuating circumstances that led to the situation, you may need to document them. Above all, be polite and respectful and try to create a good impression, even if your appeal is denied. Awards that run out can also occasionally be appealed for an extension, or applied for again for a possible second round of funding. Check the rules for the contest or ask the scholarship provider if this is the case. Even if you lose eligibility for one award, it doesn’t mean you’re ineligible for all scholarship opportunities. Search for scholarships to see what else you may be able to find.

Canceled Programs

Finally, if your scholarship program has been canceled, there are still things you can do. Some providers, like our Arizona example above, will help students find alternate funding, and may even be able to supplement some of the difference between what they promised and what you can’t find on your own. Some colleges are also making up for cuts in high-profile state and local scholarship programs by creating their own scholarship funds for the students affected. Other schools have emergency aid or one-time scholarships available to students who find themselves suddenly without the means to pay their tuition. Check with your financial aid office to see if your school can help.

Students who have already succeeded at winning scholarships are also likely to win more, since so many scholarship providers have similar criteria. If you find yourself caught without scholarship money you had planned to use, try to find some time to apply for additional awards. You may even win more money than what you lost.

General Scholarship Information

At its most basic, a scholarship is money for college that you will not be expected to repay. Scholarships are worth seeking!

Scholarships sponsored by colleges are often designated for students who fit a particular profile (from the college’s home state, holding a specified grade average, enrolling in a particular major, or bringing special talent in athletics, music, and the like).

Other outside scholarships may be available to students whose parents work for a particular company or to students who are eligible for scholarships sponsored by church or civic organizations.

You will need to check with each college to see what scholarships are available. You should also become familiar with any scholarships available through your company or community.

  About Accreditation
“Our mission is to provide training in English as a Second Language to speakers of other languages and to provide professional development via the TESL/TEFL Certificate Programs.”

The school began offering classes in January, 1994.  By 1998, CSE was nationally accredited by ACCET in Washington D.C.(Accrediting Council for Continuing Education & Training) in Washington D.C.  From www.ACCET.org:  “ACCET was founded in 1974, for the purpose of improving continuing education and training, and has been officially recognized by the U.S. Department of Education, since 1978, as a “reliable authority” as to the quality of education and training provided by the institutions we accredit. In 1998, ACCET became the only recognized accrediting agency to be certified as an ISO 9001-Quality Management System, under the international standards established by the International Organization for Standardization, and continues to hold that unique status.

Accreditation serves the interests of companies, agencies, and the public through the establishment of standards, policies and procedures in conjunction with an objective third-party professional evaluation designed to identify and inspire sound education and training practices.  When such a process is matched by an institution’s commitment to high standards and accountability, a partnership for quality becomes reality.

creditation is, at its best, a means by which good schools and good practices are promoted, while students’ best interests and educational goals are protected.  ACCET accredited institutions voluntarily commit themselves to the expense and effort of a quality-oriented, rigorous, third-party evaluation to gain and maintain accredited status, an important distinction to consider when selecting an intensive English program in the U.S.A.

USA Study Guide

12 06 2009

Why Study in the US?

International Academy of Design and Technology

Benefits

The United States is the premiere destination for international students from all over the world. The main advantages of higher education in the USA are as follows:

World class learning institutions

The United States has more institutions of higher learning than any other country in the world. More importantly than that, however, is the quality of these academic bodies. Most American colleges and universities offer top-notch education programs with highly qualified teaching staff. The research at many of these universities is cutting-edge and often published in journals worldwide. Many of the professors at these schools are leading authorities in their field. The list of world-class learning institutions in the USA is endless and include, but are not limited to: Stanford University, Harvard, Yale, Cornell, California Institute of Technology, UC Berkeley, University of Pennsylvania, MIT, John Hopkins, Northwestern University, etc.

Endless study choices

One of the best things about studying in the USA is the vast number of academic options offered to students. Since the USA is such a large country with vast resources, almost every field of study is available in the country. One can study everything from Russian history to nuclear physics. That is why so may foreigners choose to obtain their training in the USA. If you can perceive it, you can probably find some place in America to study it.

Worldwide recognition

A degree or certificate from a college or university is useless if it is not recognized by employers, other institutions or field authorities. Therefore, it is of the utmost importance to ensure than the degree from the school you choose is recognized in the place you plan to use it in. Fortunately, colleges and universities in America are given professional accreditation by different governing bodies. These schools have to earn their accreditation by meeting certain criteria, helping ensure a quality education, as well as a degree or certificate that is recognized. Most schools in the USA are accredited, though we strongly suggest that you thoroughly find out what each school’s accreditation is before deciding. There are thousands of US schools that offer credentials recognized in almost every corner of the world.

Supporting industries, training & research

Because of the vast wealth of resources in America, the opportunities for practical training related to your field of study are vast. Most college and universities have established affiliations with employers and researchers in different fields of study, thereby creating an avenue for students to obtain hands-on and invaluable experience. Many universities even require that students obtain practical training in order to graduate. In many cases, these opportunities are not available any where else in the world.

People and culture

America is a melting pot of people from all over the world. One will find most Americans to be very hospitable, friendly, kind, generous and accepting of foreigners. Of course, there are a few exceptions, as in any country, but these are not the norm. In general, the people are funny, gregarious, innovative, and eager to learn. These are traits that many international students adopt and take home with them.

Technology

Regardless of what degree a student chooses to pursue in school, he or she will have to use computers and other technologies in order to succeed. Many universities incorporate the latest technology into their curriculum, encouraging students to obtain proficiency before they go out into the workplace. Specialized technology, such as the newest medical equipment in medical schools, allows each student to maximize their true potential and gain experience that is marketable in the real world.

Flexibility

Since the USA school system utilizes credit units and often accommodates working students, most schools offer academic programs that are flexible in nature. This means that, very often, one can choose when to attend classes, how many classes to enroll in each semester or quarter, what elective or optional classes to take, etc. An American education is very conforming to each student’s needs.

Campus experience

It has been said that the friends and experience obtained during campus life are worth as much as the education itself. Many make friends that last lifetimes. The lessons learned my co-existing and living with others from all over the world are priceless.

Global focus

More and more often, American colleges and universities are focusing on the global aspects of each subject, better preparing students with a worldwide view of their field. No longer can students merely focus on certain geographic areas when obtaining their academic training. Most US learning institutions have recognized this and offer a more comprehensive and global curriculum to meet these new trends.

Study in the USA: Misconceptions about studying in the USA

Misconceptions

There are numerous misconceptions by foreigners about the USA and Americans themselves. Sadly, much of this misinformation is initiated by people who have not visited or studied in the USA. It is important that these misnomers are fully understood and not prevent a potential international student from obtaining a quality American education.

America is full of crime and is a dangerous place

Television, Hollywood and sensationalized news reporting have done a disservice to the USA, as far as painting a picture of a crime-ridden country is concerned. While it certainly is true that there are areas in America with crime problems and high crime rates, that is not the norm. One of the founders of this website, a former international student himself, has lived and worked in the USA for 13 years and has never encountered any serious crime whatsoever. In any country, there are areas that one would be more likely to be victimized by crime, and efforts should be made to avoid these areas. The USA is no different. Good judgment is always the best defense. Television and sensational news reporting gain viewers and sell newspapers. But they do not always reflect the norm.

It is too expensive

One thing that cannot be denied is that, if an international student is using foreign funds to pay for his education costs in the USA, he or she is affected by fluctuations in currency exchange rates. However, it is a misnomer that attending college or university in the USA is extremely expensive. Given the quality of the education, the potential earning power of working in the USA, as well as the various forms of aid available to students, an American education is still affordable. While there are some schools that are notorious for charging high fees, there are many schools offering great programs for much less. The key is to know how to pick the school that is right for you.

I may not be accepted or well received by the locals

Americans are some of the friendliest and most hospitable people on this earth. The USA is made up of immigrants from all over the world, and most Americans understand that their history, too, descends from another land. In fact, most Americans are eager to learn about new cultures and they welcome the chance to meet foreigners. Of course, international students should reciprocate by learning and respecting the local laws and cultures. Always ask for help. You will be surprised at how much will be forthcoming.

The USA is not known for certain academic disciplines

When one thinks of innovation, one thinks of the USA. It is no exaggeration that America is a world leader and innovator in thousands of industries. One of the main reasons is because the USA is a rich country and it possesses the infrastructure and the opportunities to train and innovate. Whether it is in molecular biology and DNA or acting and drama, the USA offers some of the best training and employment opportunities of any country in the world. It is this very culture that attracts students from all over the world.

Recent international developments have made the USA dangerous

Daily life in the USA has long returned to normal after the events of September 11. American Education System : Understanding the American education system

Do you find the American education system to be confusing and different from the education system in your own country? Do you want to attend a university in the USA? A USA high school? A USA graduate school? The American education system offers international students the most diverse set of education options in the world. In fact, an international student who elects to take advantage of the American education system can pursue anything from nuclear science to film and dance. American education possibilities are almost endless!

The American education system requires that students complete 12 years of primary and secondary education prior to attending university or college. This may be accomplished either at public (or government-operated) schools, or at private schools. These 12 years of schooling (or their equivalent) may also be completed outside the USA, thus giving foreign students the opportunity to pursue the benefits of the American education system and obtain a quality American education. Perhaps one of the most impressive facts is the large number of presidents, prime ministers and leaders from other countries who have experienced the American education system and graduated from a university or school in the USA. In many fields and industries, the American education system offers the most cutting-edge, sought-after programs at the world’s best schools. That is why graduating from an accredited American school and being exposed to the rigors of the American education system is an investment in your future.

Whether you want to study at a top USA university, a top USA college, or at a USA ESL, vocational or high school, a thorough understanding of how the American education system works is essential. Without a clear grasp of the American education system, an international student will find it difficult to make the right academic choices. The information provided in the Overview of the American education system section will help you develop that understanding. You can also search our list of top universities, colleges, community colleges, graduate schools, and boys and girls boarding schools in the American education system. It is no surprise that the American education system and the American school system hosts more international students than any other country in the world!

You can learn more about specific areas of the American education system and the American school system (high school, access to college, the USA unit system, school accreditation, liberal arts education, associate degrees, bachelor’s degrees, master’s and PhD degrees) by clicking on the links on the left of this page. The American education system offers students the widest study options in the world!

Bachelor Degree: What is a Bachelor Degree?

A bachelor degree is the most traditional degree given by US colleges and universities. It normally requires at least four years but not more than five years of full-time college-level coursework. The two most common classes of bachelor degrees awarded by US schools are the bachelor of science degree (also called the B.S.) and the bachelor of arts degree (also called the B.A.). Some schools offer only the B.A. degree, even for science majors (such as a B.A. in biology). Other schools offer both the B.A. and the B.S.

A bachelors degree is what most students pursue when enrolling in a US university or college. In fact, people with a bachelors degree earn substantially more than those who don’t. More and more jobs and careers today require applicants to posses one. Some would argue that a bachelors degree is the first step to success. At the very least, it helps open doors of opportunity. All students pursuing a bachelors degree must select a major, usually by the end of their second year. Students must complete a required number of courses (or units) within their major in order to graduate with a bachelor degree in that major. They may also be required to complete a number of courses in closely related fields in order to satisfy other requirements. For example, a student who is majoring in chemistry will not only have to complete chemistry courses, but also mathematics, biology, and physics courses in order to graduate with a bachelor of science degree in chemistry. In addition to the requirements for the major, students must also complete a series of courses outside of their major. These requirements will apply to all students attending the college, regardless of major. For example, all students may be required to complete courses in writing, foreign language, communications, and American history. Without it, they cannot graduate.

There are various types of schools that offer bachelors degree programs. The different types of US schools can be classified into the categories that are described below.

Private universities that offer bachelor degree programs

These are schools that are operated by private individuals and are financed by private funds. These schools are not controlled by any government agency and also offer many bachelors degree options. Tuition at private schools is normally much higher than at public schools because of the lack of financial support from the government. There is no difference between the amount of tuition paid by American students and foreign students. Obtaining a bachelor’s degree at a private university or college is what many international students choose. Make sure the university is properly accredited so that your bachelor’s degree will be recognized.

Public universities that offer bachelor degree programs

These are schools offering bachelors degree options are operated by a state government and are financed by public funds. They are also called state universities and sometimes have the word state in their names (for example, San Diego State University). The tuition charged by these schools for bachelors degree programs is typically much lower for students who are residents of the state where the school is located. Public universities offer bachelor’s degrees and some offer master’s and PhD degrees, too. Students who are residents of other states and international students will pay higher tuition because they and their parents have not contributed to the taxes that help finance the schools. The bachelors degree programs offered at public universities vary per school and are popular with international students.

You can also learn how to get a bachelors degree, complete online college courses and online college degrees at these online colleges.

Liberal arts colleges that offer bachelor degree programs

These are schools that offer bachelor’s degree programs and provide students with a broad-based, rather than a highly focused, education. These schools are described in detail in the Liberal arts section.

Institutes of technology that offer bachelor degree programs

These are schools that offer bachelor’s degree programs and courses primarily in the fields of science and engineering. Unlike a liberal arts college, institutes of technology provide students with an education that is focused in their major. These schools are usually best known for their graduate programs.

Religiously affiliated universities that offer bachelor degree programs

These schools offering bachelors degree programs were founded by religious organizations. Most religiously affiliated schools in America were founded by Christian organizations, but other faiths are also represented. These are all privately funded, and many offer what is referred to as a liberal arts education. Nearly all will admit students of all faiths, and only some will require students to attend religious services. Search our list of top USA universities and colleges offering bachelor degrees.

Specialized vocation schools that offer bachelors degree programs

These are highly specialized schools that offer bachelor’s degree vocational training in certain fields. Examples of such schools offering bachelor’s degrees would be Julliard (acting) Berkley, (music), Parson’s School of Design (fashion), etc. In addition to bachelors degrees, these vocation schools also often offer graduate degrees.

Online colleges and online universities that offer bachelors degree programs

Besides physically attending a school in the USA, international students also have the option of obtaining their bachelors degree online. There are numerous accredited online colleges offering online bachelors degree options. Click here to view a list of some top online colleges and universities offering bachelor degrees. Bachelor Degree Quotes:

After earning a bachelor degree, my salary jumped 45%. I am so glad I can now put my bachelor degree down on my resume.”

“Earning my bachelor’s degree was the best decision I have ever made. The bachelors degree has opened doors that were never open before.”

“Almost everyone has the opportunity to earn a bachelors degree these days. A bachelor degree will help you obtain better jobs and secure a brighter future.”

“I highly encourage anyone considering it to get their bachelors degree. If I can get my bachelor degree, anyone can. You wont regret it.”

“I strongly believe that a bachelors degree is essential in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive job market. My bachelors degree helped open doors that were not open before.”

“Possessing a bachelors degree is essential in so many industries today. The world is getting more skilled and educated. Without a bachelor degree, a job candidate will be at an disadvantage.”

Is a bachelors degree worth obtaining? What is the value of a bachelor degree?

According to the Census Bureau, over an adult’s working life, high school graduates earn an average of $1.2 million; associate degree holders earn about $1.6 million; and those with a bachelor degree earn about $2.1 million. That means that a bachelor degree holder earns almost double that of a high school graduate. In addition, it has been reported that bachelor degree holders save more during their lifetime. Clearly, it is worth earning a bachelor degree!

Masters Degree Programs and PhD Programs

A college graduate with a bachelor degree may find that degree to be insufficient for the type of profession he would like to have. It may often be necessary to pursue an advanced degree, such as a US master’s degree or US doctorate (also knows as PhD) degree, to advance your career. For example, a US master’s degree may be necessary if you are seeking a position as an economist with your local government, or you may need a PhD degree to teach at a university in your country. In addition, some disciplines are taught only at the graduate school program level in the USA. Among these are law, medicine, and dentistry, both of which are doctoral programs.

Not all USA colleges and universities offer USA masters degree programs. Even fewer offer US PhD degree programs. Also, the number of majors offered at the graduate level by a graduate school will usually be much smaller than the number of majors at the undergraduate level. Occasionally, a school will only offer a major at the graduate program level. For example, Stanford University offers a USA master’s degree in business administration, but offers no undergraduate business degree program. Search our list of top US graduate schools offering master’s degree programs and PhD degree programs.

The US masters degree is a graduate school degree that typically requires two years of full-time graduate school coursework to complete. Unlike students pursuing a bachelor’s degree, students in a master’s degree program will complete courses that are highly focused in their field of study (their major). As such, students must have already decided on their major before applying to a master’s degree program.

The US PhD degree or doctoral degree is even more focused and specialized than the master’s degree. Some students will complete a master’s degree before applying to a doctorate degree program, but that is not always necessary. Completion of a US doctorate degree typically takes between three and six years. The length of time will depend on the student’s educational background (a student with a master’s degree may take less time to complete his PhD if it is in the same field), the field of study selected, the student’s dedication and ability, and the complexity of the thesis the student has chosen for his PhD. The thesis is a very long, extensive, and original research paper that is a requirement for completing the PhD program. (Some master’s degree programs also require a thesis, but it is much simpler and shorter than the PhD program thesis.) Get detailed information by searching our list of top US graduate schools offering master’s degree programs and PhD degree programs. Application calendar

The following information will help you plan for the college application process by giving you dates by which each of the necessary steps should be completed. Following a schedule will help you make sure that everything is done on time and that no items or steps are forgotten.

18 months before beginning your studies in the US:

· Begin your search of possible US colleges or universities that you would like to attend. Read through college reference guides and visit college websites. Also talk with your relatives and friends who have studied in the US. Request information from 10 to 20 different schools so that you can make a good decision on where to apply. For more help and information on the search process, go to Choosing a school. To have some of the best US colleges contact you directly, click here.

· Register and start preparing for the TOEFL and other entrance tests (such as the SAT or GRE).

· Continue to work hard at your subjects at school. Good grades in the courses you are taking now will count heavily in the admissions decisions.

15 months before:

· Take the TOEFL and other entrance tests. Most universities require you to take the test before December, so taking it now gives you an opportunity to take it again in November and improve your score.

12 months before:

· Send letters to colleges you have selected requesting applications and information, or obtain this information and necessary forms from their websites. You should choose: (a) one or two schools that you really like, but may be too difficult to get into; (b) two or three that you also like and which you think will accept you; (c) one or two which may not be your favorites, but you are quite sure will accept you.

· Identify two or three teachers or other people whom know you well and ask them to write recommendation letters for you.

· For undergraduate applicants the best references are teachers and your school principal. Family friends, religious counselors, and others should be used only if they know you very well and can speak specifically about your academic goals and potential.

· Graduate students should obtain letters from their teachers or professionals in their field whom they have worked with and who can speak specifically about their academic potential and relevant accomplishments.

· Ask the schools you have attended to start preparing your transcripts. These are official school documents that show the courses you have studied and the grades you have received in those courses.

· If your previous TOEFL, SAT, or GRE scores were not satisfactory, register for the test again.

11 months before:

· If you have not yet received the application forms you requested from the schools you wrote to, send another letter repeating your request.

· Study the applications you have received. Note carefully the deadlines on each of them. Remember to allow time for delays in the mail.

· Ask your schools to send certified copies of your academic transcripts to each of the schools where you are applying.

· Ask your teachers to write their letters of recommendation for you. Give them the forms provided by the schools and a stamped, addressed envelope for each letter they will be mailing.

· Undergraduate students should write their application essay. This essay is an important part of the application. It should reflect who you are and what you feel is important. Try not to repeat information you have provided in other parts of the application, but instead work to make the essay unique and personal. Get comments on it from an English teacher. For more information on writing your essay, refer to Personal essay.

· Graduate students should write their statement of purpose if the schools have indicated that they require one. This is an important part of the application. You should show in your statement how your education so far has created a foundation for your goals, and how your proposed coursework in the US will help you achieve those goals. You should be as specific as possible about your research interests and past accomplishments.

· Make photocopies of the applications and begin to fill in the required information on the copies. You will later transfer the information to the originals. If any questions confuse you, seek help from your teachers, or from someone who has studied in the US.

10 months before:

· Complete your essays and application forms, including the financial aid application forms, using the originals (not the copies). Type or write by hand very neatly and carefully. The finished applications will be your introduction to the schools, so you want to make them look good. Keep a copy of the completed applications for your records. Mail the originals by airmail in time to meet the deadlines.

· Take the TOEFL and other exams again, if you need to improve your scores.

· Check with your teachers and your school to make sure your recommendations and transcripts have been mailed in time to meet the deadlines.

9 months before:

· It is not unusual for schools to request more information or resubmission of something you have already sent. Respond promptly to any requests you receive.

4-5 months before:

· You will start hearing decisions from the schools. Contact the admissions office at any school that you do not hear from.

· Accept only one school’s offer, and let the other schools know of your decision. Ask the school you have chosen to attend to send you the I-20 form.

Make housing arrangements.

· Apply for a passport if you do not already have one.

3 months before:

· Get a visa application form from the US embassy or consulate nearest you. For a complete description of the visa application process, go to Immigration.

· Make travel arrangements. Schedule your trip so you arrive at least 15 days prior to your school’s orientation.

USjournal.com, LLC provides efficient and effective services for the international education industry in two distinct markets:

  • Qualified prospective students from around the world: We invite students, scholars and executives (and those within their spheres of influence) to review our campus profiles (in 17 different languages) without registration or fee.
  • U.S. campuses that want to welcome those students: We help our clients promote their academic and experiential programs, primarily via the Internet and other emerging technologies, with a focus on quality over quantity.

Company Structure: Over the years, we’ve gleaned much of our inspiration from Harvard Business Review and their brilliant case studies. For example:

We’re not a big company, by design. There are many reasons for the big successes of small nations. These countries lack the expensive, often flawed infrastructures of the larger powers that can block or dilute innovation. They can’t afford systems that don’t work, so they tend to devise practical inventions that are relatively bulletproof. And yes, new ideas can spread more easily through smaller, closely connected populations. Source: Harvard Business Review, Nov 2004

We help prospective international students avoid over-choice. Other sites simply serve as directories for the thousands of different options offered by the U.S. higher education system. We feature an exclusive list of U.S. campuses with excellent academics and outstanding support systems for international students. As Lisa Johnson noted in her book, Mind Your Xs and Ys, The people of Generation X and Generation Y crave… a filter they can trust to edit the morass of products and information out there. USjournal.com serves as that filter for globally-minded students interested in studying in the USA.

Scholarships to Study in the USA

Financing a post-secondary education is no easy task, as you may have already discovered. There are a number of resources to assist you; for example, your local educationUSA Advising Center may have current information about limited scholarship opportunities.

More than two-thirds of non-U.S. students use funds from their own personal accounts and from their families as the primary source of financing their education. Only about 20 percent of non-U.S. students receive most of their academic funding from a U.S. college or university.

A few U.S. colleges, universities and English language programs offer primarily partial scholarships for non-U.S. students. The criteria and policies at each individual institution vary. For details, contact a school that interests you, and explain your situation. But be prepared: International student scholarships are very competitive!

Trends in College Pricing: The College Board regularly publishes results of surveys taken at colleges and universities around the United States. Recent results: Increases in published prices for two-year and four-year public institutions in 2007-08 were slightly larger than in 2006, but lower than the average rates of growth over the past five years.

Not surprisingly, costs across U.S. campuses vary greatly. The College Board lists the average cost of one year’s undergraduate tuition and fees for this past academic year:

  • $2,361 at a two-year public college (offering primarily associate degrees)
  • $6,185 (in-state resident) at a four-year public college / university (offering bachelor and advanced degrees)
  • $23,712 at a four-year private college / university (offering bachelor and advanced degrees)

Overseas students in associate degree programs at community colleges tend to finance their own education. More funding opportunities are available for graduate students in research universities.

Private Loans for International Students

Financing an education in the United States is difficult, even for a U.S. student. For non-U.S. students, paying for college or university in the U.S. is even harder. Almost two-thirds of all students enrolled at private four-year U.S. colleges and universities receive loans of some type. U.S. students can receive loans guaranteed by the government (Stafford loans, among others), but these valuable loans are not available to non-U.S. students. Luckily, private student loans are available to international students on the same terms as U.S. students.

Before applying for a loan, you should exhaust the following potential funding sources:

  • Apply for international student financial aid from your host school in the U.S.: There is a searchable list of U.S. schools awarding financial aid to international students: InternationalStudent.com/schools_awarding_aid
  • Research and apply for international student scholarships on your own: InternationalScholarships.com
  • Carefully evaluate how much money you or your family can provide towards your education. Every dollar you can pay directly is one less dollar you have to borrow.

Some international students can fund their U.S. education by simply using those sources. However, like many U.S. students, most international students will need to fund at least a portion of their U.S. education with loans.

It’s important to become familiar with the most common provisions of international student loans, and the language used to describe them. For example:

  • U.S. Co-Signer Required: International student loans require a U.S. citizen or permanent resident (Green card holder) as a co-signer. The loans are credit-based, meaning the co-signer must have good credit history, good employment history (or other income history if the co-signer does not work), and must have lived in the United States for the past two years. Not every prospective student can find a family member, friend or other U.S. citizen or permanent resident to co-sign for them. But for those that do, they can access private student loans on the same basis as U.S. students.
  • Funds Paid Directly to You: Loan funds are paid to you, not to the school. This is a great feature in that you can use the funds for living expenses — but it also means that you must use the funds responsibly. Pay your tuition, room and board, health insurance and books first — anything extra is a luxury!
  • Repayment: Repayment of an international student loan can be deferred while you are enrolled full-time, and for six months after you finish. After that, you will have up to 20 years to repay the loan, with a payment due every month. You are also eligible for hardship extensions if you run into unexpected circumstances that prevent you from being able to repay the loan for a short period of time.
  • Proof of Finances: One nice feature of international student loans is that you can use the loan approval in order to satisfy the school and visa requirement of showing one year’s financial resources. You can apply for the loan without the proof of enrollment from your school, and receive conditional approval. Then you can provide your U.S. campus with the pre-approval from the lender, and the U.S. campus will see you will have the necessary funds. Typically, a financial aid officer or international student advisor at a U.S. campus is quite familiar with this process, and will assist you accordingly. After admission and enrollment, you can complete the loan process and receive your funds.
  • Interest Rates: Interest rates are variable, based on the LIBOR (London Inter Bank Offered Rate (explanation by InternationalStudentLoan.com) plus a margin. LIBOR is always several points below prime, so the margin is from 3.5 percent to 7.75 percent, and will be set by the lender based on the credit history of your co-signer and the repayment plan you select. The better your co-signer, the better your rate! LIBOR changes monthly, up or down, so the rate will be reset monthly. For an example of interest rates and repayment terms: InternationalStudentLoan.com
  • Online Application: You can apply online or by phone, and receive an almost immediate response as to whether you are conditionally approved for the loan. Then, you will need to sign the promissory note, and provide proof of enrollment and immigration status to receive your funds.
  • No Application Fees: There are no application fees to apply for an international student loan. There is an origination fee if you actually receive the loan, but that amount is included in the total loan amount, and does not have to be paid in advance.

Student Visa Requirements

A U.S. education is an excellent investment in your future, and international students are very welcome in the USA! For the very latest visa news, direct from the U.S. government: UnitedStatesVisas.gov and travel.state.gov

The Basics: The college, university or program you apply to will send you all the information you will need about securing a student visa that will allow you to study in the United States. You will be able to apply for a visa only after you have been accepted to study at a specific institution. (If more than one university or program accepts you, you must choose which school you will attend before you apply for a visa.)

The institution will send you a special form, called an I-20. This is not a visa. The I-20 is a visa application, and will be used together with your visa (if one is granted to you), passport and other documentation to enter the United States.

The United States Embassy or Consulate can provide you with detailed information regarding the visa requirements of your specific situation. For example, the F-1 visa is for students enrolled in full-time academic or language courses. The J-1 visa is issued to U.S.-bound students who need practical training that is not offered in their home country. Another example is the M-1 vocational student visa, which is for students that meet certain criteria while attending vocational colleges.

If a visa application is approved, students generally need to wait about four to five weeks to obtain a visa from a consulate or embassy. Educational advisors recommend that students apply during the early part of summer (May, June, July) in order to arrive at their U.S. academic destination in time for the fall semester, which typically begins in August. If the student wants or needs to apply for a visa during the late fall or early winter (November, December), please allow at least one month for your request to be processed.

U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services features forms, fees and fingerprint information, as well as a section on Teacher and Student Resources.

There will be a number of forms and documents you will be asked to provide with your final visa application, including proof that you have the financial means to support yourself during your stay in America. The process may seem complicated, but remember, the professionals at your institution of choice and the officials representing the United States in your country help thousands of students complete the visa process each year.

Very Important: Know the law about your student visa. Obey all the rules which apply to your particular visa status. The immigration rules in the United States are very strict and specific; it is your responsibility to know and follow them. Consult legal experts if necessary.

English Testing Advice for Studying in the USA

Register now: TOEFLGoAnywhere.orgClick Here. The TOEFL test is considered the global standard for English language proficiency. By scoring well on the TOEFL test, you will be eligible for admission to virtually any school in the world, including top colleges and universities in the United States. In fact, more than 6,000 universities and institutions in 110 countries accept the TOEFL test as part of their rigorous admissions criteria. Registering is easy, but test centers do fill up quickly. To locate a test center near you, go to Click HereTOEFLGoAnywhere.org and select from more than 4,300 TOEFL test centers around the globe.

In many cases, the starting point in your pursuit of U.S. academics is a widely recognized exam that measures your English proficiency in a variety of ways. Please contact your local U.S. education agency for further information on what exams are available in your area; it is important that you verify the credentials of the examination center. Some exams are Internet-based or computer-based, while others are taken with pencil and paper. U.S. campuses may specify different English proficiency requirements, so please begin corresponding directly with international admissions counselors.

The Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) is a product of Education Testing Services of Princeton, New Jersey in the United States. The TOEFL is recognized by colleges, universities and employers all over the world.

You may choose from a few different types of exams, depending on your intentions; options include general English, business English, or English for academic purposes. Each English as a Foreign Language test typically contains sections on listening, structure, reading and writing.

40 120 433
20 63 350

Another test is the International English Language Testing System, or IELTS. It is now recognized at more than 200 U.S. universities. IELTS is considered a test of English as an international language (not just British), so it may be more representative of the type of English an international student encounters on a U.S. campus. The varieties of English on the test include North American, UK, and Australian; no one variety is considered more important than another.

IELTS profiles English language proficiency in four skills: reading, listening, writing, speaking. The exam has flexible test dates, is available worldwide, and has results available within two weeks. There is no official 1:1 correlation between IELTS and TOEFL or CBTOEFL scores because the tests are different.

Again, please contact your local U.S. education agency for further information on what exams are available in your area.
